Ayurvedic is a Sanskrit word - “Ayus” Life and “Veda” Knowledge combined together to form “Ayurveda”, can be defined as Knowledge of Life. Origin of Ayurvedic practices date’s back to 5000 years, when it was practiced by spiritual Rishi’s, who laid the foundations of the Vedic civilization in India. Ayurveda is not just a health care system but a form of lifestyle which aims to maintain perfect balance and harmony. Ayurveda offers unique blend of science and philosophy that balances the physical, mental and spiritual components necessary for holistic health.

It is a Holistic Life science based on a belief of achieving health through balance of the spirit with the emotional and physical life forces. These life forces are guided by three major bio energies called Vata (air) Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water). Our body constitution is determined by varying degrees of these three guiding principles. Illness and disease sets in when there are imbalances in a body’s constitutional makeup, if there is too much or too little of one of these three life forces.

hirodhara, an ancient Ayurvedic healing practice performed in India for over 2,000 years, is the application of warmed, herb infused sesame oil gently poured onto the forehead for an extended period of time. Herbal oils are gently placed into the nose while rare Ayurvedic essential oils are placed onto the hands. It is performed in a relaxing environment with the client lying face up on a massage table.

Shirodhara is one of the most relaxing therapies; it awakens the third eye and lulls the entire body into a state of calmness. Oil is poured in an even stream on to the “Ajna Chakra”, which in the centre of the forehead continuously to pacify, thereby revitalizing the mind and body, diminishing the effect of ageing, reducing stress and strengthening the physical constitution.

The continuous touch of the oil on the fore head sends information to the nervous system & hormonal system through fore brain & pituitary gland (corresponding to the third eye). This information is interpreted by the neuro hormonal network to bring the desired changes in the body.

Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm and restore the nerves, harmonise vata constitutions, release stored emotions and purify the mind, and is also considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness. Shirodhara has been traditionally shown to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, some mental disorders, headaches, excessive thinking, nervousness and many other conditions commonly affecting in today’s active lifestyle.

It is common for most people to notice many of the following effects after Shirodhara treatments: reduction in stress, reduction in excessive thinking, calming of the emotions, release of negative emotions, improved sleep, improvement in insomnia, vivid dreaming, muscle relaxation, improvement in mood, reduction in anxiety, alleviation of mental anguish and a temporary blissful state. Many people experience profound levels of insight and emotional healing after Shirodhara: in essence, it calms the body, mind and spirit.
